Blew the Dust Off My Story

I made a New Year's resolution last year: to add illustrations to a children's story I've written and get it ready to send to publishers by the end of the year. Funny how time can get away from you. Last year's resolution has become this year's resolution. Last year I struggled with the story. There were parts of the plot I just didn't like, and I was stuck. I let it get away from me and sit undone.

This year a few minutes talking to a professional children's writer lit a fire under me to blow the dust off my story. I took a four-day weekend to focus on it. That's all it took to get things moving again. I'm happier with the story now. I'm putting the finishing touches on the words and have begun working on the art.

I'm working on some quick thumbnail sketches for the storyboard. I'm trying to break the story down into a standard 32-page picture book format. At this point I'm looking at how the story is revealed as the pages are turned and I'm starting to think of the composition of each double page spread.

My goal is to finish a pencil sketch book dummy and two completed illustrations by the end of this year. That's all I need to package it up and send it to publishers. I'm happy that this project is finally moving forward again.
